The winners of the energy price 2009* in the district Ebersberg are Sonja and Jochen Werner from Zorneding. They recieved 1,500 euros for the sustainable restoration of their house with low-energy solutions. Mr and Mrs Werner transformed their listed Biedermeier house, which is 200 years old, into a comfortable home. This was a challenging task since the house was empty for two decades. Furthermore it was run-down and did not correspond to modern requirements. There was neither heating nor warm water – only a source of cold water in the first floor. Mr and Mrs Werners wished to restore their house according to modern energy requirements and as emission-free as possible. Above this they wanted to install the heat insulation by preserving the special character of the house and by completely avoiding fossil fuels.
„Throw everything out“ – and let the sunshine in
Extensive construction works were necessary for making the Biedermeier house habitable. Concerning the energy supply Mr and Mrs Werner decided to use two modern biomass stoves and a solar system that supplies the house with warm water and heating.
Amongst others, they installed a combination system from Consolar. It consists of 12 square metres, TUBO 12 Cl evacuated tube collectors and the heating system SOLUS II 1000 L. The TUBO 12 Cl is the flatest tube collector on the European market. Due to its special construction it prevents heat losses – even in winter months. The SOLUS II serves as a central heat supplier. The two stores are connected to it. A special continuous flow principle makes a quick and high use of solar energy possible. The SOLUS II and TUBO tube collectors were recently rewarded with the Blue Angel for their efficient heat supply. With Consolar's regulator CONTROL 701 house owners can even control the system with their laptop.
Successful Restoration of a Listed Building
The extensive restoration of the Biedermeier house was worth while for Mr and Mrs Werner. Today, the building fulfils modern energy requirements. The heat insulation as well as the installation of the solar system lead to an agreeable temperature and supply the whole building with warm water all year round. The house fulfils the norms of the solar vision 2030 of ESTTP (European Solar Thermal Technology Platform) that stipulates a sustainable energy use. Thus, the successful restoration reveals that a sustainable heat system without fossil fuels is not only an alternative for new buildings but also for old houses - all requirements for listed buildings considered.
* Private households, businesses and schools can participate in the energy competition. The aim is to reward candidates with exemplary, successful projects concerning energy savings, energy use or concerning the use of renewable energies as well as new technologies for energy savings and energy optimization.
